Google’s open sourced Android OS: What it has accomplished and what is expected? – Part 2

In 2011, Apple sold 39 million iPads versus 7 to 8 million tablets using the new Android tablet OS (v3.x). Amazon and B&N, with Google’s ball, developed low-price tablets based on Android 2.x; they sold about 6-7 million this year. However, the bigger picture
still has room for Google’s operating system to pose as the king.

Google might see a tough competition from companies like Amazon or Facebook in the future but the company still has key products in the basket. Applications like Google Maps, navigation system and Android market are still in their possession. Google offers
these products at its discretion. Not 100 percent of the software is open sourced like UNIX or Linux.

On the other hand, one of the competitors, who will see a tough competition from Android and iOS is Windows Phone OS. The operating system currently is seeing success in the market for the reason that Microsoft Corporation has not made a single iota of software
public. Every application and every line of code is their property. This is a nice strategy but given the fact that many will be working on Android in the coming day and less on Windows Phone, which as the name suggests is solely targeted at smartphones. However,
release of their tablet oriented operating system, Windows 8 is around the corner; the beta version has been released to techies for reviews.

There are speculations that the Windows 8-based tablets in 2012, hopefully, will be powerful machines, most likely hybrids of laptops and tablets. Therefore, Android has some tough competition ahead of itself from both Apple and Microsoft.

Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich is set to adorn the tablet segment earlier in 2012 and many more smartphones during the same time. This latest version has propagated a learning curve for the novice but overall look has been a satisfactory upgrade.
