Muhammad Essa: Pakistan’s best forward in recent times?

Arguably the most famous face in Pakistani football, Muhammad Essa, is synonymous with the game, mainly due to his consistent scoring at the highest level. The chaman-born star has been neglected by the PFF due to his demands to be the captain in recent
years but nonetheless, he is definitely the most skilled play-maker in the country.

Possessing one of the best left-foots in South-Asia, he catapulted himself to fame when he leveled the score’s against India with sumptuous free-kick in injury time. The Green-Shirts have come quite close to gaining sensational results such as the 3-2 loss
to Japan as well as the close call against UAE.

Closely analyzing the proceedings, one can see how Essa influences proceedings with his array of passing abilities and creates opening for Pakistan despite the stern defence on display by the Asian giants.

During the Geo Super League, Pakistani football fans witnessed live what talent the 28-year-old possessed and his left-footed strikes could seen troubling the goalkeepers in every match. So it begs the question, is he really the best forward we have had
in recent times.

The answer would be a simple yes, as no one has come close to matching the skills of the KRL star. However if we take foreign players into the equation, Essa faces tough competition from the likes Adnan Ahmed, not to mention, Hassan Bashir, who is said to
be the most talented player Tariq Lutfi has ever come across.

Lutfi himself also confessed to this writer that he had tried to convince Essa to return to the National-team fold, but the player was adamant that he be played as the striker and  be given the captaincy if he did so.

“He is one of my own boys at KRL. It’s true that he can still give much to the National-team but his demands of being played as a striker and being handed the captaincy are not being entertained by the PFF.”

“No Federation in the world would cave into these demands and allow him to return,” Lutfi said.

While Essa can be considered a top player, he cannot be recognized as the best in Pakistan unless he returns to the team and shows the world what he’s made of.
