After MQM, PPP mulling resolution on new provinces

Following in footsteps of the MQM, the PPP is all set to table a resolution on new provinces. Reports on Monday informed that the party will move parliament for the Seraiki province.

The PPP was already working on a draft of resolution of Seraiki province, but the MQM took the lead.

In an apparent bid to hold back the support in the region, the party decided to second the longstanding demand of Seraiki province. “A draft is being prepared and the party will table it soon,” the report quoting sources said.

On the other hand, the PPP has also decided to support the resolution and the constitutional amendment for formation of Hazara and Seraiki provinces, proposed by the MQM.

The decision was taken in a meeting between MQM’s Haider Abbas Rizvi and PPP leaders Naveed Qamar and Syed Khurshid Shah. According to the agreement, both the parties will support the resolution of each other about creation of new provinces in the country.

The reports said that due to influence of other political groups in Hazara and party’s strong association with ANP, the PPP was not very vocal for giving it a separate status.

PPP leader Khurshid Shah said that the issue was important and could not be left to the next parliament.

Shah said that the people of the region would not tolerate if anyone attempted to create hurdles in this regard.

“We will invite all political parties to support the resolution,” the PPP leader said adding all parties knew the meaning of opposing the demand of Seraiki Province.

Meanwhile, members of the PPP from Southern Punjab representing the party in the National and Provincial assemblies are divided on the Seraiki province.

A member of the PPP who belongs to Rahim Yar khan said the PPP Parliamentary Party gave a go-ahead for South Punjab as a separate province without taking the members from Bahwalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar on board.

The member of the National Assembly said the people of above-mentioned districts did not want to become part of Seraiki province as they were looking restoration of Bhawalpur province on earliest. He also criticized the party saying that the leadership wanted
to divide Punjab without any homework.
