Hollywood saw sales loss in 2011, mainly due to expensive entertainment – Part 2

The latest movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was among the biggest hits of the year and so forth the movie has grabbed around $362 Million since the release on December 23. But that revenue was greatly hindered by the expensive ticketing due to the
IMAX Experience.

When you look at the number of tickets sold the picture is even gloomier. In the fourth quarter of 2011 ticket sales were down 27.4% from last year. That’s the worst fourth quarter drop since 1982 (the limit of Box Office Mojo’s historical data), and the
fourth quarter is when studios release a lot of films they hope will be big money earners.

This is the second straight year the box office has been down. In 2010 sales were off 5.2% from the year before. 2009 was a high point for the box office with $10.6 billion in ticket sales.

At the same time as movies are becoming more expensive than ever, films are hitting homes more quickly and people have the kind of big-screen televisions that offer great viewing experiences without the cost and hassle of going to a theater.

One of aspects of declining sales is the dearth of new ideas. The Super Hero and comic book culture, majorly promoted by Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, and the rat race of releasing sequels without any attractive story are some of the aspects that have taken
the toll on sales in the last two years.

Because of the experts predict that we are going to see continued decreases at the U.S. box office. The speculation is that the biggest hit of this coming year will be The Dark Knight Rises. The last Batman movie,
The Dark Knight, earned $1 billion at the box office.

Another movie that is on the horizon to earn a great deal of media and public attraction is The Avengers however; its success might be hindered by Chris Nolan’s Bruce Wayne.
