Samsung ended the last quarter with revenues of 3,500 million Euros, special thanks to record sales of their smartphones. Their earnings represent a 22% increase over their performance in the third quarter.

The South Korean company sold 35 million phones in the quarter, up 25% over the corresponding period. For the first time, Apple’s worldwide leadership in smartphones sales has been overtaken.

With both organizations relative newcomers to the business, the duel between smartphone manufacturers is anticipated by consumers worldwide.

Apple entered the world of telephony in 2007, while Samsung has been a part of the industry since late 90s, but did not achieve gains in mobile division until 2010. Today, there smartphone division is responsible for 36% of their profits.

The results have not been affected by the disputes Apple has over the use of patents, including bans on selling some of their products in some countries.

BNP Paribas expected Samsung to sell 170 million devices this year, up from 97 million in 2011. They have been able to achieve these returns thanks to their wide range of models from the Galaxy Nexus, with Android software.

Samsung’s latest attempt to reach new consumers is via the Galaxy Note, a tablet with a five inch screen. It has 4G capability and is powered by dual-core processors in an attempt to bring together the best features of the phone and tablet.

However, it is expected that due to weak growth of the economy from global economic situation and falling prices of flat panel displays, revenues will fall for the calendar year.
