2012 – A year of change

The decision of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s core committee about holding general polls in October 2012 instead of 2013 swept a tip-off satisfaction among the political circles across the county.

The rumours about premature demise of the incumbent government have been discussing everywhere since it came into power, back in 2008. Political and media pundits are out in giving dates for last day of the government.

Firstly, people gave the PPP-led coalition government only one year that changed into the demand of mid-term elections, after it entered into the third year.

After completing the third year, the political pundits appeared to have awarded another year to the incumbent, demanding the fresh polls before the Senate elections. However, none of the above mentioned conjectures became true and the incumbent stayed put.

The last option lies with opposition is only disdain to which it considers the most suitable option at the time being. In the present scenario, the move looks peace-making. The opposition’s demand of early elections slightly qualifies if it held in October.

People, particularly from the opposition benches, are enormously talking against the government, terming it failed and incompetent. However, the recent move will dispel the fog engulfed the political fronts and will help the incumbent in the Senate elections.

It is worth mentioning here that for the first time both halves of the Upper House would have been elected in the same sitting government. It is a really point of concern for the opposition that PPP’s position will be further strengthened in the house

The unbending majority of PPP in the Senate would translate into legislative influence many years into the next government. If the party is in opposition the situation will always come in handy.

The demand for fresh elections is going to be a tricky matter in the coming days. Law and order situation will not be ideal in the times of terror that looks a dream in the republic.

ANP and the PPP, the self-confessed liberal parties had been targeted by terrorist attacks in the previous elections and the next ones are also to going to be married with the violence.

All the responsibility lies on the security agencies to maintain law and order situation in the pre-election campaigns as well as the polls.

Before deciding titles for articles, it should be pondered upon whether the title is grammatically and logically correct. The title for this article reads: “October 2012 to be year of a change”. First of all, this is logically incorrect. October is a month and not a year. Therefore, the sentence should read “October 2012 to be month of change” or “2012 to be year of change”. Secondly, ‘to be year of A change’ is not an incorrect phrase, however, a better statement would be ‘to be year of change’ or ‘to be a year of change’. ‘A change’ would be a more specific phrase. Still, if ‘A’ was omitted it would be more appropriate as then the sentence would encompass the meaning in a wider aspect. This kind of errors should be avoided as they give a negative impression of both the writer as well as the newspaper. Both should take special care that such mistakes are not made in the future. The above criticism is in no way intended to humiliate or hurt the feelings of the writer and is just a sincere advice by a regular reader.
