Sony Corporation has come forward with yet another innovation in home entertainment; making a bold statement that television manufacturing is still their forte. The company showed their first pure-breed LED television, Sony Crystal at the Consumer Electronic Show 2012, Las Vegas.

To date, if someone had the illusion that their LED TV is purely made of light emitting diodes, they should think again as Sony has killed the buzz with a prototype of their new line of televisions.

Sony crammed a whopping total of 6 million LEDs into a 55-inch giant television. So far the LEDs in a television were only fancy LCD pixels with a single LED source behind each one of them. However, this new mesmerizing TV has got pure LEDs in the front which illuminates a limitless colour palette.

There are 2 million small light sources in each of the red, green and blue colours (RGB) to give a crisp, sharp and much more colourful image on the screen. These light sources however, might give the best image quality in the market but still the power consumption has not been revealed to the public.

Sony claimed that the new Crystal will be a superior tech on LCD and Plasma formats of the screens. The exact resolution of the screen was not mentioned in the presentation but from the looks of it the prototype gave the impression that not a single display would match its resolution.

For a clear perception of what the LEDs are, the example giant screens that are nestled on the top of stadiums for broadcast viewing and at the road sides near traffic signals and populated squares that show various advertisements are the best example.

Though those LED displays are built for a bright view from far furlong distances, they are quite dull when viewed from close distances. The reason for these screens have larger LED sources is a bright display from a wider angle.

However, the new Sony television uses nearly microscopic-in-size LED bulbs that cannot be differentiated from literally any distance.

The company also said that the appliance is still a work-in-process and will be on the shelves soon. However, from the looks of it, this new revolution is nowhere near a mass production.
