Parliamentary body to finalize recommendations on ties with US

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) indicated that it would finalize proposals for the new terms of engagements with the United States (US) on Wednesday.

A meeting of the PCNS was held Tuesday in the Parliament House under the chair of Senator Raza Rabbani.  Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar, discussed in detail about the committee’s proposed recommendations.

While briefing the panel, the minister said Pakistan could not ignore the US, as both the countries are interdependent in various fields beside economy and financial assistance.

“We will initiate dialogue with the United States after taking the mandate from the parliament on the new terms of engagements,” she added.

“Pakistan not only receives financial assistance from the US but also exports manpower, textile products and other goods to the US,” she said adding there were many other areas of mutual cooperation.

Similarly, she maintained, the US was fighting a war on terror in the region with its allies and it had understanding about the role of Pakistan. “Both the countries are also knot in several accords in terms of war on terror, she said.

Khar briefed the parliamentary panel that a u-turn in relations with the US at once would not be possible. However, it should be brought to equity.

While talking to the media following the meeting, the foreign minister said that the PCNS did not give any proposal to convince the US about civil nuclear technology.

She observed that recommendations of the committee would be honoured in true manners and government would redraft its policy on lines of the new terms.

Khar went on to say that the committee had also adopted the suggestions of envoys conference held last year, seeking their recommendations in terms of evolving the country’s foreign policy.

Chairman PCNS Senator Raza Rabbani said officials from ministries of foreign affairs and defence presented their views about the recommendation prepared by the committee.

The draft of the recommendations would be given final shape on Wednesday after considering the suggestions of both the ministries, Rabbani informed.
