Jamshed Dasti quits Pakistan People’s Party

In what appeared to be the latest blow to the Pakistan People’s Party amidst rising tensions with the military establishment and judiciary, MNA Jamshed Dasti Wednesday announced quitting the party, expressing his grievances with the party leadership.

While speaking to the media following his announcement, he stated, “I will not join any political party and will contest the elections as an independent candidate.”

The Multan-based politician said that he would come to Islamabad soon to submit his resignation in the National Assembly. Putting all blame on top party leadership of the Southern Punjab, he stated that Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was constantly interfering in his constituency by posting their blue-eyed government officers.

“Khar and some other party leaders had usurped Muzaffargarh and everything is being done according to their wishes,” the MNA held. It is vital to mention here that Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani also belongs to same region.

The dissident leader was of the opinion that Khar had not paid any visit to the region to know about the difficulties of the masses. “The people of her own constituency need her attention,” he added.

He further said that the corrupt officers were posted in his city, adding that he had complained to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani several times but to no avail.

In a peculiar move, President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned Dasti in Islamabad. He also assigned three party leaders a task to redress the grievances of the dissident MNA to keep him tied with the PPP.

Dasti was elected as MNA from NA-178 Muzaffargarh in general elections in 2008. Later he tendered his resignation in 2010 after his opponents challenged his educational qualification in the Supreme Court.

Dasti was re-elected in June 2010 from the same constituency in by-election. He has now announced to contest next election from NA-179 Muzaffargarh-IV against Hina Rabbani Khar.

In 2011, he had also submitted his resignation but later withdrawn after the prime minister assured him to remove his concern.

Some media reports claimed that he is in contact with Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the vice-chairman of PPP. However, he clarified that he had not made his mind to join any party.
