Contagion: Nothing Spreads like fear – An exceptional disaster thriller

Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion is a 2011 thriller which was released September 9th, 2011. It features Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Bryan Cranston.

The movie follows the rapid progress of a lethal transmission virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving deadly disease grows, an international team of doctors rush to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than does the virus itself.
They must first identify the type of virus and then find a means of combating it.

With a production budget of $60 million, the project was announced in February 2010. It was also announced that Damon and Law will work together for the first time since The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999. The director received cooperation from the Centres
for Disease Control and Prevention and also worked with a group of scientific advisers for the film. Filming began on September 25th, 2010 and was initially scheduled to last until January 11th, 2011.

Filming took place in Atlanta, Chicago, Dubai, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia and Malaysia. The filming also took place at the Hong Kong International Airport in Hong Kong and at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

The movie received positive reviews from the critics who saw the flick at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes report 84 percent of critics gave it a positive rating, based on reviews by 226 critics, with an average
rating of 7.1 out of 10. The site’s general consensus states, “Tense, tightly plotted, and bolstered by a stellar cast, Contagion is an exceptionally smart — and scary — disaster movie.”

J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader gave it a score of three out of four and declared, “Along with the stars, Contagion has plenty of scares, though in contrast to Matt Damon and Kate Winslet, they’re things you encounter every day.”

David Denby of the New Yorker said, “The presence of movie stars helps: their authority is part of what keeps us fascinated by the gruesome fable, juicing it a bit, so that we can actually enjoy it.”

Contagion is an amazing disaster movie and a must watch for everyone.
