JP Duminy guides South Africa to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka

South Africa beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in the second One Day International (ODI) of the five match series at the Buffalo Park, East London in South Africa on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

The hosts have now taken a lead of 2-0 in the series and will be looking for a third consecutive victory in order to seal the competition.

AB de Villiers, the South African skipper, was extremely happy with the outcome of the match and said, "The toss didn’t play a big part today. We played good cricket through out and I am very proud. We picked up wickets at crucial times, and Hash the
Rock (Hashim Amla) played really well. There would have been more pressure if they had got those 20-25 runs. Hash’s wife is yet to give birth, but he will be there for it and will most probably miss the next game."

The home team’s middle-order batsman JP Duminy earned the man of the match award for his brilliant knock of 66 not-out. He was pleased with his performance and hoped to continue scoring runs for the team.

The star left-handed player stated, "It was great to get a chance at No. 4. We wanted to be more flexible than we usually are. So between myself, AB and Faf we thought we will mix it up a bit and today was my chance. I enjoyed the bowling too,
and hope to get 10 overs in sometime. We always knew we’ll get there as long as we had wickets, and that’s what happened. Just a bit of cramp up there in the end."

Earlier, Sri Lanka were put into bat and the team scored 236 for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. They were completely out of sorts in the first half of the innings, but recovered well to post a challenging total.

Promising young batsman Dinesh Chandimal was the top scorer of the innings with an unbeaten 92-run knock.

Mornel Morkel shined with the ball for his side, scalping two wickets for 39 runs.

In reply, the Proteas got off to a fantastic start, courtesy a superb half-century from Amla, who contributed 55 runs to the total.

The team lost a few wickets in the middle of the innings, but Duminy’s innings guided them to 237/5 in 48.4 overs.

The tourists’ pacer Dhammika Prasad picked up three wickets in the innings, but his effort went in vain.

Both teams will play the third ODI of the series on Tuesday, January 17.
