Pakistan’s IT industry flourishes in 2011 despite the rising tension with US

Friday, January 13, 2012: Zia Imran, Managing Director of Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), in a press conference said that the IT industry is defying all the odds and is flourishing at a rapid pace.

The MD termed 2011 as a viable year for the IT industry and believes that 2012 will be even better, if the country continues producing quality professionals.

Imran was surprised with how the industry managed a growth rate of 15% in 2011, despite facing multiple challenges in the domestic and international arena, and the economic depression which has hit nearly every country on the surface
of the earth.

“Year 2011 proved to be good for the IT sector. Despite challenges in the domestic arena, the country’s negative perception in the West, rising tensions between Islamabad and Washington and the global economic slump, the industry
has shown steady growth,” said Imran.

He further added, “Logically our exports, of which 60% to 70% go to the US, should have declined due to these problems but the industry actually increased its market share in America. The IT sector has been growing at 15% to 20%
for the last three years. The growth in 2011 was about 15%.”

According to an estimate by the PSEB, the industries export in 2011 stand at about $560 million and analysts believe that this value can rise up to $860 millions, if the Industry continue to grow at this rate.

The PSEB MD is optimistic for a brighter future of Pakistan IT industry. Imran has urged local institutes to raise their standards and provide good quality individuals, so the industry continues its rising trend.

Imran said, “The talent is therebut the institutes need to produce high-quality graduates to meet growing demand both locally and internationally. If we can do better at producing quality professionals, we can certainly grow beyond
20%.”

Imran further said that the industry is working at full capacity on the HR side at this point of time but that does not mean all IT professionals have jobs. All this is because many fresh graduates do not have the skills required
by the companies.
