Former ambassador wants Akram Sheikh barred from defaming him publicly

Former ambassador to the United States (US), Hussain Haqqani has asked the Judicial Commission to stop Akram Sheikh, the counsel for Pakistani-origin US national, Mansoor Ijaz, from leveling charges against him, publicly.

Through his counsel Zahid Hussain Bukhari, the former ambassador Friday prayed the Commission, assigned to probe memo scandal, that Akram Sheikh was defaming him in public.

On January 9, Akram Sheikh told the media after the proceedings of Judicial Commission constituted by the order of the Supreme Court that life threats were given to Mansoor Ijaz through e-mail. Haqqani claimed that Sheikh was pointing fingers at him.

Such fallacious and fabricated claims carry no weight but based on mala-fide. He further stated that Mansoor Ijaz’s email address was published in newspapers as a result of his own and his counsel’s fault, he stated in an application Friday.

The former envoy said the applicant did not send such email to Mansoor Ijaz, adding the applicant was a law abiding citizen.

“The exercise is only to unnecessarily invoke the applicant’s name is irresponsible and amounts to creating false impressions and guilt by association,” it added.  “It does not reflect well on a senior counsel of Akram Sheikh’s stature,” the application said.

He, therefore, requested the commission to direct Akram Sheikh, learned counsel, not to attribute/ make false, incorrect and provocative statements about applicant in whatsoever manner in the interest of justice.

Both, Haqqani and Mansoor Ijaz, are parties before the judicial commission in the inglorious memogate issue.

Mansoor Ijaz, the US business tycoon claimed that Hussain Haqqani with consent of President Asif Ali Zardari sought US help, through a memogate, in case of army coup after May 02 incident in which Osama Bin Laden was killed by American Navy SEALs.

However, Haqqani denied any such attempt and tendered his resignation in order to hold free and transparent investigation. It is worth highlighting here that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) is also probing the issue on directions of the Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Whether the memo was written or not, its consequences once again put the country at the edge of military coup in the present scenario.
