Italian luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia’s Captain under scrutiny

Italian prosecutors are now focusing on the captain of
luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino, who is accused of abandoning the ship well before passengers were safely evacuated.

Costa Concordia was aground off the coast of Tuscany on Saturday after water poured-in through approximately 160-foot, compelling the chaotic evacuation of some 4,200 people leaving behind three dead.

Costa Concordia’s captain was noticed by Coast Guard officials and passengers fleeing from the scene moments after the incident happened.

Later, Costa Concordia’s owner, issued a statement on Sunday saying “significant human error” on the part of the captain, Francesco Schettino, “which resulted in these grave consequences”.

“The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and the captain’s judgment in handling the emergency appears to have not followed standard Costa procedures.”

Carnival CEO Micky Arison also said in a statement,

“At this time, our priority is the safety of our passengers and crew. We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our hearts go out to everyone affected by the grounding of the Costa Concordia and especially to the families and loved ones of those who
lost their lives.”

Italian authorities are currently inspecting from Francesco Schettino about the whole incident and what went wrong during their voyage.

Costa Concordia was a Concordia-class cruise ship and entered in service July 2006 and considered the largest ship to be built in Italy, approximately at 114,500 tons.
