Gilani appears before Supreme Court

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared before the Supreme Court of Pakistan today. The appearance was made by the Prime Minister because the Supreme Court held Yousuf Raza Gilani in contempt for not complying with the orders of
the top court in the country.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been repeatedly asking the government of the country ruled by the Pakistan’s People’s Party to write a letter to the Swiss government so that the dormant money laundering case against the President of Pakistan
Asif Ali Zardari could be reopened. Due to the non compliance with the demands of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Prime Minister had been directly asked by the court to take steps in the regard of opening up the corruption case again but Yousuf Raza Gilani
had resisted. As a result, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has held the Prime Minister under contempt and directed Yousuf Raza Gilani to appear before the court.

The lawyer of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Aitezaz Ahsan, expressed the stance of his client by giving the following statements: “We bow our heads to the court’s decision. I will try to satisfy it about section 248’s presidential immunity. God willing,
I will try to convince them that on this issue presidential immunity is complete.”

The case under which the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari is named was closed under the National Reconciliation Ordinance that was made at the time Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf was the President of the country. However, the apex court of Pakistan had
deemed the NRO as illegal as a result of which the case should automatically have been opened.

The re opening of the money laundering case against the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari was not done because the government maintained the stance that the President enjoyed complete immunity under the constitution of the country whether he is present
outside or inside the country.

Yousuf Raza Gilani has maintained the stance of the government and has resisted the re opening of the money laundering case because of which he stands at the risk of being dismissed from office.
