Underworld Awakening tops the US Box Office

Underworld Awakening is the fourth instalment in the Underworld series with Kate Beckinsale reprising her role as Selene. The movie was released on January 20^th, 2012 and despite receiving negative reviews, it bagged $25.3 million on a three-day
opening weekend at the Box Office.

The $70 million budgeted movie grossed $9.3 million on its opening day on Friday at the box office. The next day it bagged 10.2 million and on Sunday, Underworld 4 grossed 5.7 million, making a gross total of almost $25.3 million. In addition to this, the
movie opening to number one with close competition by Red Tails which landed at the second spot after earning $18.8 million.    

The fourth instalment of the movie follows the vampire warrior, Slene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where ordinary people discovered the existence of both Vampires and Lycan clans. Not only this, the humans are conducting an all-out
war to eradicate both immortal species.

Despite rocking the box office, the flick received poor ratings and negative reviews. Review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes’ general consensus states, “There’s more vapid action and less story in Underworld Awakening than previous instalments, making the whole
affair feel inconsequential.” It also reported that 32 percent of 41 critics gave positive reviews, with an average rating of 4 out of 10.

Thomas Leupp of the Hollywood.com gave it a score of two out of five and declared, “The carnage occasionally pauses to allow Beckinsale a moment to emote over lost love or seek a fleeting bond with a screen partner, but soon more beasts are on hand, and
the soulless slaughter hastily recommences.”

Scott Nash of the Three Movies Buffs was kinder to the movie and gives it a score of 2.5 out of four. He said, “If you liked the earlier Underworld films, or if you haven’t seen them but enjoyed the Resident Evil movies, then you’ll like this one too.”

Regardless of these poor reviews, the movie is a must watch for action lovers.
