Despite strong rebuttal, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) once again at the receiving end of Senator Raza Rabbani’s criticism, who called it an ‘economic terrorists’.

Senator Raza Rabbani, one of the strong political figures of PPP, while speaking on a point of order in the Senate, said that the KESC was robbing the people of Karachi by transferring billions of rupees to abroad.

A day back, the Senator had suggested the government to take over the power company because the management had failed to meet contractual obligations. On which, the KESC categorically rejected his allegations, defending itself against the senator’s earlier criticism.

While responding to the rebuttal KESC had given, Rabbani stated that the power company owed Rs55 billion to Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) and other power generation companies, and also owed Rs36.775 billion to Sui Southern Gas Pipelines Limited (SGPL) for the last two years.

The power company rebuffed the allegations completely asking the PPP leaders to play effective role in ascertaining uninterrupted supply of electricity consumers by getting government departments to pay billions payable to the utility.

The statement issued by the power company observed, “The Senator should provide relief to the power consumers of Karachi by playing his due role in payment of billion of rupees payable by the government to KESC, and ensure regular supply of adequate natural gas to its generation plants.”

It further stated that the federal and provincial governments had failed to accomplish their contractual responsibilities as they owed Rs56 billion under various heads, including unpaid bills.

According to the press note, the government committed to a regular and stable supply of 276MMCFD of natural gas to run its old power plants when the current management was taking over the KESC. It continued that the incumbent also promised another 130MMCFD for the new BQPS-II but to no avail.

The handout asserted, “Non-payment of such huge outstanding amounts and short supply of natural gas on the part of government has been playing havoc with the power generation and supply system for Karachi consumers.”

The power company also mentioned, “The utility neither has an endless cash flow to buy furnace oil through upfront cash payment for power generation, nor is it an ideal position to sustain an ever-growing circular debt.”
