Counterfeit medicines: Supreme Court takes suo motu notice

Islamabad: (Monday, January 30, 2012) The Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken suo motu notice of the tens of deaths caused by counterfeit medicines distributed by Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) to heart patients in Lahore.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani will start a probe into the matter by tomorrow. For a formal proceeding of court’s hearing, notices have been issued to the attorney general and the provincial health secretary.

Meanwhile, commenting on the issue, Minister for Religious Affairs, Khursheed Shahd today placed the entire responsibility of the deaths on Punjab Chief Minister.

Khursheed Shah, who was in Lahore today, while talking to the media personnel, questioned Shahbaz Sharif’s holding of 17 ministries. He wondered why the chief minister could not find 17 capable persons in his party to handover
to them the reigns of respective ministries including health.

Besides the deaths of over 100 heart patients in Lahore, the minister for religious affairs also placed the responsibility of over 350 deaths from dengue fever onto the CM. He was of the view that all that human loss incurred was
due to Shahbaz’s incompetence.

Shah was of the view that after the passage of 18th amendment, drug regulation was now a responsibility of the provincial governments.

Commenting on Mansoor Ijaz’s request to record his testimony abroad, Khursheed was of the view that the apex court was not a mobile court which would go abroad to record statements.
