Scientists found a formula to predict age

Scientists from Boston University have claimed that they can predict age and tell whether someone will live to 100 years. The predictions made by this new study are claimed to be to 85
per cent accurate. The researchers developed this complex formula after the study of the centenarians DNA to identify common genetic variations that contribute to their unusual longevity.

During the study on centenarians, the scientists discovered a series of DNA markers that are reasons behind a long and healthy life. The discovered genes can assist them to explain why
people live beyond 100 years despite their living style and the environment around them.

The age-predicting test possesses 60 to 85 per cent accuracy depending on the age of the subject. It means that the test can be useful to predict the age in early stages of an individual’s
lifespan. However, this discovery can also help sort out the age related problems and can help treating them on time, as it has the ability to identify the long-lived groups with certain shared genes.

One of the leading authors, Dr Thomas Perls said, “Further study of these genetic characteristics may yield a better understanding of the genetic and biological bases of delaying or escaping
age-related diseases and achieving longer survival.”

Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College London, Tim Spector said, “This is an interesting study of rare centenarians – it suggests that genes are much more important in deciding
if you live to 100 or beyond than if you live to 85. With hundreds of genes contributing, personal prediction is never going to be good.”

This research was conducted by Boston University scientists in 2010 and was published in the Science journal but due to some problems with the data, this research was later retracted.
