A brand new Lahore but at what cost?

Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif became the Chief Minister of Punjab for the second time on June 2008. He received as many as 265 out of 375 seats in the provincial assembly.

The main reason behind his success was that Mr. Sharif was the only candidate after the Pakistan Muslim League-Q boycotted the elections. His contributions to reshape Lahore into a modern and a true Hi-Tech city are applauded by everyone and there are no doubts about his hard work.

His efforts to construct and reshape the walled city of Lahore are prominent and you cannot miss them. Kalma Chowk Fly Overs are amongst the most beautiful and effective bridges you can witness locally. The dual bridges hold most of the traffic load and the underneath traffic remains in control.

Muslim Town Mor, The Main Barkat Market Road, Bhatta Chowk, Canal Bank Road and many other locations are being constructed under the watchful eye of the Chief Minister Lahore.

It seems as if Mr. Sharif has some special sort of attraction with the capital city of Punjab. It could be because of the fact that he himself resides in Model Town, Lahore and the Kalma Chowk fly over is helpful for him as much as it is for everyone else which is pretty much acceptable.

However, digging the whole city at the same time appears to be a bad idea as the situation has created a traffic chaos within the walled city. Currently, the ongoing projects include widening of the Canal Road which is a massive task within itself.

Traffic jams are a routine these days especially during the rush hours. Students are missing their classes at schools and the offices are running behind as most of their staff is stuck in traffic as a result of the construction.

The worst part of  the ‘Work in Progress’ alert is that you only gets to see it when you are already in a middle of a storm of automobiles. Construction work is nothing new and there is nothing negative to criticise about it however, proper measures shall be taken by the Punjab Government to intimate the citizens about the blocked roads.

Moreover, alternate routes shall be determined before starting such procedures.  The Canal Bank Road is one of the most important roads in Lahore and a wider road will definitely help the citizens in the future but currently the future seems pretty much jammed up.

No one denies the importance of improved roads in the city and we all back Mr. Shahbaz in his pursuit to make Lahore one of the best cities in the world. However, addition of a little procedure to his recipe of construction can make everyone’s job lot easier.
