Islamabad, February1: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muyhammad Chaudhry, has taken Suo Moto notice against deaths of the patients resulting from the use of contaminated medicines provided by the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), in Lahore.

A bench under the supervision of Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani has been formed by the Chief Justice and it will start the hearing of this case from today.

Chief Justice has taken action considering the protests of people, who were the relatives of those who died as a result of using adulterated drugs supplied by PIC. Yesterday, the notices of this case were sent to federal and provincial health secretaries,
advocate general and attorney general.

The unofficial death toll reaches over 100 revealed by Shahbaz Sharif, the Chief Minister Punjab, however, the official figure of deaths resulting from the intake of contaminated deaths is 89.

Because of the intake of adulterated drugs provided by PIC, patients suffered with an unknown disease in the bone marrow that caused the stoppage of the production of white blood cells and eventually proved deathly for the sufferers.

There were many symptoms of this disease that appeared to patients including low platelet quantity, chest infection, change of complexion and blood-vomiting.

Because of the stoppage of white blood cells, this disease ends the resistance power in the human body and ultimately takes away his life.

An investigation team has been formed under the supervision of Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) that is investigating the issue and has arrested many people who are allegedly involved in the distribution of contaminated medicines.

Those who are being arrested by FIA include Dr Saleem Jafar, who was the MS of Punajb Institute of Cardiology and was suspended a few days ago.

The outdoor wards have also been closed throughout the province. The Young Doctors Association has announced that they will protest against the closing of wards in whole Punjab.

Now, it seems that the matter will be resolved soon as Supreme Court has taken notice of that and the responsible people in this case are expected to be penalised according to the law of the land.
