After serving a six-month sentence at Portland Young Offenders Institution, Pakistani fast bowler, Muhammad Amir, has been released from the institution. The youngster was convicted for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal last November.

He completed half of his term at the Portland Young Offenders Institution and was freed on bail for good behaviour; however, he still has to finish his five-year ban period.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) banned the 19-year-old Amir, along with team-mates Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt, for minimum five years in February last year, while the other two, Asif and Butt, were banned for seven and ten years respectively. Meanwhile, Butt and Asif are still serving their sentence, one year and two and a half years respectively, in England.

Before coming to Pakistan, Amir will spend three weeks in London where he will have a series of meetings with his lawyer to finalise an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the five-year ban that the International Cricket Council imposed on him.

On the other hand, the chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf has open doors for the youngster’s return if the selection committee considers him worthy of being a part of the national team.

The chairman said last month, “Whenever he is cleared by the International Cricket Council and serves his punishment, we think he needs intense counselling and then the selectors can decide about him. As far as his playing again is concerned that is for the selectors to decide because there is no doubt about his immense talent and he is still very young.”

The left-arm bowler took 51 wickets in 14 Tests in his career before the spot-fixing scandal brought his career to an abrupt halt and after the investigation done by the Scotland Yard, he was banned for five years.
