The cyclist will miss the 2012 Olympics Games, Tour de France and The Giro d’ Italia

Alberto Contador is considered as one of the most talented stage race cyclist of the current era. He has secured an impressive number of victories during the professional career.

The Spaniard was accused of using unfair means to enhance his performance during the Tour de France 2010. Spanish Cycling Federation banned him straight away but lifted the ban later on and the cyclist made his come back at professional cycling.

World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) and International Cycling Union (UCI) appealed against the Spanish Cycling Federation and the case was forwarded at the Court for Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The 29-year-old was allowed to race freely until the final decision on his case is made. The hearing faced a lot of setbacks and it was finally postponed till February 2012.

Contador holds a total number of six Grand Tour victories  including two Giro d’ Italia, three Tour de France and one Vuelta a Espana win under his belt.

Court for Arbitration for  Sport handed a two year ban to the cyclist and also stripped off from his Tour de France 2010 and Giro d’ Italia 2011 victories.

The cyclist is now banned from professional cycling till 5th of August 2012 and he will miss all the major cycling events of the season including Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia and the 2012 Olympic Games.

However, Contador will be able to make an appearance at his home mega event, Vuelta a Espana 2011 and he is hopeful to make an impact at the race.

Alberto’s ban from professional cycling has also caused a sense of disturbance for the whole squad of Team Saxo Bank. He was signed by the Danish team for 2011 and 2012 season and helped the side with a number of crucial UCI points.

Team Saxo Bank claimed its World Tour license on the basis of those points and cyclist’s disqualification from the races means the team is in deep water to survive its license.

Contador is loved across the world and has a number of die-hard fans especially in his homeland, Spain.  It was revealed earlier today that a 74-year-old retired professor has threatened that he will not eat until the unjust sanction on the cyclist is overturned.

Cyclist’s brother Fran Contador briefed that Alberto will join the Danish team after his return and Team Saxo Bank has fully supported them during the proceedings.

Fran explained, “They have given us their complete support during every moment of this process and they have told us that everything is OK after hearing the verdict and that they want to be able to count on Alberto in the future”.

It is believed that the Spanish cycling star will be seen in action at his home Grand Tour, Vuelta a Espana 2012.
