New Zealand rout Zimbabwe in final ODI; win series 3-0

New Zealand outclassed Zimbabwe by 202 runs in the final One Day International (ODI) of the three match series at McLean Park, Napier in New Zealand on Thursday, February 9, 2012.

Batting first, the home team amassed 373 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. The star of the show was wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum, who stormed his way to 119 runs off 88 deliveries. He clobbered seven fours and five thunderous
sixes in his blistering performance.

Earlier, openers Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill gave a terrific start to their side, scoring half-centuries at the top of the order.

Zimbabwean bowlers looked absolutely helpless against the Kiwi assault, as no one was able to contain the opposition. Veteran spinner Ray Price was the pick of the bowlers, scalping a couple of wickets for 57 runs in his 10-over spell.

The minnows had no answer to the mammoth target set by the hosts and were all out for 171 runs in 44 overs. Skipper Brendan Taylor top scored for his side, contributing 65 runs to the total. However, he lacked support from the other end, as none other batsman
even managed to score in the thirties.

Most of the Kiwi bowlers chipped in with wickets, as Nathan McCullum, Kane Williamson and Tarun Nethula dismissed a couple of batsmen each.

Brendon McCullum was named player-of-the-match for his splendid batting display. He was extremely pleased with his performance and said, “It was nice to come in with a few runs on the board. Martin and Rob played outstandingly as they have all series. The
environment we’ve got and the belief are really good at the moment.”

On the other hand, the tourists’ captain was disappointed over his team’s dismal show in the 50-over series. He stated, “Congratulations to the New Zealand side who have outclassed us, we can learn a lot from them. There is a lot we can take out of the series
even though things haven’t gone our way. We now need to get something out of these Twenty20s.”

The first Twenty20 of the series will be played in Auckland on Saturday, February 11.
