Rishi Kapoor: Remakes don’t mean an exact copy

The trend of making remakes is pretty old in the Bollywood industry but the Indian actor, film producer and director, Rishi Kapoor, who recently made a lot of new fans with his excellent performance in Karan Malhotra’s film ‘Agneepath’, feels there is nothing wrong in remaking a movie.

Malhotra’s ‘Agneepath’ did an excellent job at the Indian box office by crossing Rs. 100 crore mark in the first two weeks. Nevertheless, before the release the movie had to face a lot of criticism since it was a remake of the 1990 cult classic of the same name.

Kapoor, who played Rauf Lala’s role in the movie, stressed remakes doesn’t mean an exact copy. He said his role was nowhere in the original movie. The actor further stated the original ‘Agneepath’, which starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role, had a funny character of ‘Krishnan Iyer M.A.’, which was played by Mithun Chakraborty, but the new ‘Agneepath’ didn’t have any such character in it.

Kapoor said, “Karan made “Agneepath” because his father had made it 22 years back, and it didn’t work that well. It was a cult film, but he was very disheartened that it didn’t work. After so many years, a new director gave him his version of the film, and he wanted to fulfill his father’s dream. Remakes don’t mean an exact copy. Even this film was moulded, like my character wasn’t there in the original film.”

Meanwhile, Kapoor while sharing his thoughts with the media emphasised that there are not many stories left out there now and this is one of the main reasons why the filmmakers make remakes.

He added, “See, world mein kahaniyan toh saath-aath hi hain, problems toh woh hi hain. Humein banana toh wahi padta hai, so I don’t think there’s any harm if you can dabble with remakes.”

‘Agneepath’ was released on January 26, 2012 and along with Rishi Kapoor the film feature superstars like Hrithik Roshan, Sunjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles.

Rishi Kapoor is currently participating in Sajid Khan’s ‘Housefull 2’, which is a sequel to the last year’s release ‘Houseful’.
