Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh planning to make a Hindi film on a Bengali novel

Sujoy Ghosh’s upcoming movie ‘Kahaani’, which is scheduled to hit the cinemas on March 9, is one of the most eagerly awaited films of this year and the reason behind it is obviously Vidya Balan, as she will play a lead role in the movie. However, the director-producer is now planning to make a Hindi movie based on a Bengali novel, Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in The Forest). The film was originally made by Satyajit Ray back in 1970 and was nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 20^th Berlin International Film Festival.

Sujoy believes there is a lot of literature in India, which has not been discovered till date.

“I’m a huge Sunil Gangopadhyay fan, and this is the book I loved best. The story has stayed with me even though I read it when I was must have been in class eight or nine,” said Sujoy. “I wanted to adapt a book for my next film since we have so much great literature in India that has not been exploited.”

Sujoy further added that the novel has a great story line and a film made on it will surely be a treat for the audiences. Sujoy admitted it will be a huge challenge for him he but on the same note he stressed his forthcoming film was challenge for him too.

Sujoy remarked, “I know I’m putting my head on the block. Satyajit Ray is God and the odds are stacked against me. I have to put my best foot forward because if I go wrong with my favourite Ray film, Bengal will kill me. It’s a huge challenge, but then so was Kahaani with a ‘missing’ hero, and a heroine who is seven months pregnant.”

The novel ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ revolves around four friends who, for a change, take off to the forested tribal areas in Bihar and then return to the city after three days with some amazing findings.

Well, all said and done, in order to start off with the new project Sujoy will have to wait and see what response he gets after the release of ‘Kahaani’.
