A final sigh of relief for Pakistani fans as PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has approved Shahid Afridi’s name to lead the side in Asia Cup.
It was reported by a local TV channel that most of the senior players will be left out from the event scheduled in March, 2012. The new faces will be inducted in the side to ensure a solid team for the upcoming T20 and the 2015 ODI World Cup.
The Boom-Boom made his comeback at the England series and his performance during the opening four matches is commendable, in both departments of the game.
The 31-year-old criticized the selectors for choosing a week team during the ongoing ODI series against Team England.
He applauded Pakistan’s performance during the test series to clean sweep the English side but also suggested that the selection for the ODI format of the game was not up to the standard.
The Green side overcame Team England with a splendid bowling performance during the recent test series. The only discussable batting performances were, by Younis Khan, Azhar Ali and to some extent Asad Shafiq.
The Asian cup is starting on March 12, 2012 in Bangladesh as per the latest scheduled announced by the organisers. The tournament will feature a total number of seven, fifty over matches including the final.
All the matches will be held at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur and will be played under lights. The proposed schedule for the coming event is as under.
1st ODI- Bangladesh Vs Pakistan on Monday March 12th
, 2nd ODI- India Vs Sri Lanka on March 13th
, 3rd ODI- Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka March 15th
, 4th ODI- Bangladesh Vs India March 16th
, 5th ODI- India Vs Pakistan March 18th
, 6th ODI-Bangladesh Vs Sri Lanka March 20th
, 7TH ODI- The final match will be played between the top two teams
It will be interesting to see if Afridi can live up to the expectations of his fans across the country and return home with the overall win at the Asia Cup.
Pakistani fans are still seeking revenge from the Indian squad since the World Cup 2011 semi final defeat. The March event is a perfect stage for Team Green to prove its strengths at the 50-over format of the game.
The victory will not come easy as both India and Sri Lanka are in supreme form at the in progress tri nation series in Australia.
