Separation of dried products from the air – Part 2

The discharge of the product from the drying chamber is called the primary discharge. The primary recovery of the product is from the conical base of the chamber due to the separation effect of the cyclonic air flow created within the cyclone. This guides
the product into a rotary valve from where continues product removal is obtained.

The rotary valve consists of 8 bladed rotors in dust –tight bearing and sealed shaft. The drive system is isolated from the valve interior, eliminating any chance of oil or grease contaminating the powder.

Cyclone installed downstream of the dryer recover the particles that remain suspended in the air and come out through the air duct located at the bottom of the chamber (Stanbury, 1984).

The type of cyclone to be used in the design the plant is reverse flow type. The air mixed with the powder move in spiral from down to the base of the cyclone, separating the powder out of the cyclone walls. The cyclone should be designed to give an inlet
velocity of between 9 and 27 m/s (Sinnott, 2007). The air speed into the cyclone is increased at the inlet duct of cyclone (smaller diameter), which increases the efficiency of the cyclone.
