The Unfortunate Police Murder of a Punjab University Guard

The Punjab Police has established itself as one of the most violent departments in the world and are renowned for their extrajudicial torture on people in order to force them to plead guilty to a crime that they probably never even committed.

Such was the case with Muhammad Imran, a guard of the University of the Punjab and resident of Wafaqi Colony Lahore who was not only tortured by the police but lost his life in the process.

Imran, who was posted as a security guard for the Statistics Department, had been taken into custody by the Muslim Town police due to allegations of theft against him. It was not clear at the time to what he had stolen as some sources claimed it to be an
ambulance and others, a motorbike.

According to criminal law, every arrested individual must be presented in court within in 24 hours from his arrest but unfortunately, Imran was detained in police custody for six days and faced cruelty in the form of beatings and other things only he would
have been able to describe.

He was under care in Jinnah Hospital due to his critical condition and died on Sunday morning, nearly five days after he was admitted, which sparked protests around the area including some organised by the Jamiat-e-Talaba in the day, carrying on into the
night after police refused to register a case against their own officials.

This is certainly not the first time an incident like this has occurred, but one of the many. Only the bereaved can feel the true pain of this happening but the question is, will justice be given to them or not?

Like the previous case when Rangers in Karachi shot and killed a young boy in broad daylight and were dealt life sentences, the police officials involved in this case should also be made examples out of.

Instead of finding a friend in our very own police, we find enemies and are scared to approach them with our problems out of fear. What kind of enforcers of the law do we have in our country where the poor and ordinary citizens of this great nation are treated
like criminals?

Surprisingly, according to sources, Imran was not even on duty the day the incident occurred. The FIR which was registered amazingly had only the name Imran on it and without mentioning any address or family name, the only Imran that police could point their
fingers at was apprehended.

Not having seen a more incapable and incompetent police department, it is only an appeal to whoever has the authority of taking action, that the people involved in the death of an innocent man be made an example out of for generations to come.

Muhammad Imran was laid to rest later on Sunday night in a cemetery near his place of residence.
