What the 4G indicator on the iPhone 4S screen really means? It means nothing – Part 3

For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone–who also still have our unlimited data plan–data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle.”

This means that the users, who use the 4G HSPA+ technology, and the conventional 3G network, will be limited to 3GB of data transfer, while the users, who own true LTE devices, will have data limited leveraged to 5GB.

Since iPhone 4S has an HSPA+ chip in the circuit, it will still be limited to 3GB of data. Though it indicates the 4G, it still is on HSPA+ network. So, no cake for iPhone 4S users at the moment. However, that will not be the case with the new iPad as the company claims it is capable of working on 4G LTE network. Therefore, the new tablet will be able to avail AT&T’s 5GB data plan.

As for the iPhone 4S users, the phone was using the so-called 4G HPSA+ network before the update and they will be using the same even after the process. It only a matter of renaming the network, however, the reason why Apple has done that is still ambiguous.
