Formula 1 2012, the season of quality, excitement and the unknown

Fans of Formula 1 will be counting days, hours and minutes before the 2012 season begins, as the build up to the season has not seen so much uncertainty in terms of which team will be leading the grid.

The upcoming season is leading up to be quite a cracker as the pre-season testing has shown the gap between the teams for a pleasant change is marginal at best. Teams are unsure of how their cars are going to behave in race situations be it the cause of technical difficulties, new parts or just lack of track time.

The gurus of the game have still tipped Red Bull and McLaren to be the leaders of the pack but in true reality nothing is clear at the moment, as Red Bull are fixated over its new parts dilemma, and McLaren are suggesting that their new car is quicker than the pre-season tests showed.

While Ferrari have had a horrid time in the pre-season tests, many teams have stopped to judge their season performance by looking at their pre season woes. Mercedes, Lotus, Sauber, Force India, and Toro Rosso have shown good pace and reliability with their cars.

If that whole scenario was not enough for the adrenaline junkie, there is the small matter of a record six world champions revving their engines on the grid at the same time.

It will be a year for Sebastian Vettel to prove to world that he is a true champion. Lewis Hamilton wants to prove that he has still got it in him to go for the title wins. Jenson Button given his form in the 2011 season will want to make the next step forward and claim the coveted title and be recognised as the leading driver for not only his team but in the world as well.

Fernando Alonso although may be hampered by the seemingly faulty Ferrari but cannot be discounted as long as he is behind a wheel. Kimi Raikkonen making a comeback after a two year hiatus has nothing to lose but everything to prove. Michael Schumacher starting in what may be his last season in the sport is going to be only gunning for the title and nothing less.

Teams are also predicting a very competitive and unpredictable start to the 2012 season. Lotus boss Eric Boullier suggested that the season is going to be a “freaky one!” Mercedes Ross Brawn said that the field looks very competitive and the prospect of six world champions is in itself enough to be excited about.

He went on to add that the quality of the field is another reason that most cars are looking like they are strong contenders for the title. He also tagged the season to have the potential of becoming one of the best seasons of the sport to witness in a number of years.

The season is sure to start with a bang on March 18 with the opening Australian Grand Prix, but action will come alive starting from Friday, March 16 with the first practice run. It may not be for the faint hearted as teams are going to go head to head to prove their mettle on a much equal scale than seen in a lot of years.
