Bring the new SSD and put it in place of the older one. Normally, the traditional HDDs and new SSDs have the same foot print and width but if they have a difference in dimensions, there are covers available in the market to nestle the SSDs inside to fix them up in place of HDDs. Or you can leave the new SSD hanging in the system. Because it has no moving parts, there is no chance of damage to the drive in desktops; that’s the beauty of it.

For laptops, the process is a little tricky as the portable systems incorporate a number of screws and a cover that has to be located first. Usually, the hard drives are placed in a convenient position like optical drives. However, they can also be found under the battery or right next to RAM under the motherboard.

Remember the place(s) size(s) of the screws. If there are some left after the completion, it means something went wrong or you missed a spot.

After undoing screws, take the hard drive out, normally they are inserted into a fixed SATA plug or there is miniature sized plug with a wide cable attached to it. Upon detaching the drive, put it in some safe place for back-up on a rainy day.

Reciprocate the process  with SSD and tighten the screws to make sure there is not play in the attachment. Cover the portion tightly so that dust cannot penetrate inside.

Finally, start the computer to boot from the SSD. The system is going to ask for reboot a number of times to get used to the new member of the family. Do it, its worth having a faster computer.

You are now going to observe the difference in rebooting the computer or launching a running a software. The Sleep-to-wake-up time counts in seconds and is instant.

Welcome to a new computer without purchasing a whole new system.
