Opposition rebuffs revised foreign policy

In quite an unexpected move, Leader of Opposition, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday rebuffed the revised foreign policy presented by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) in the joint-sitting of the Parliament.

Earlier, the parliamentary committee tabled much-awaited proposal of recommendations for new terms of engagement with United States (US) in the aftermath of American-air-strike on Pakistani check-posts that killed 24 troops.

Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, who also heads the committee, presented the recommendations before the joint-sitting of the parliament, seeking amendments in the Pakistan’s foreign policy. However, the opposition rejected the proposal, seeking two-day time to review the draft.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan expressed his views after Raza Rabbani read the recommendations on the floor of the house, saying how come foreign agencies be permitted to launch an operation on Pakistani territory.

The PML-N leader said the proposal of recommendations had nothing extra-ordinary in it, as the ideas it is maintaining have always been everyone’s say-so. He observed, “Every government starts its reign with the same words”.

He said that there was no point in enlisting new policy terms as the government will not able to execute the recommendations, adding he said it was useless to comment or argue on it till the government puts the words into action.

Chaudhry Nisar asserted, “On the one hand, it says that the purpose is to secure Pakistan’s sovereignty and on the other hand it says that the working of international security agencies in the country would be transparent. Tell me, which independent country lets foreign security agents work on its soil?”

Calling the proposal of recommendations mind-boggling, the opposition leader said the parliament itself is permitting foreign security agencies to operate in the country. He also complained that they were not provided copies of the draft prior to the joint-sitting.

He commented, “The committee worked in a weird way. Its recommendations are present in the report, but drafting was done by the government officials alone”.

The report has handed complete control over to the government, which is putting sovereignty at stake, he added.
