In the ongoing scenario, the question ‘to write or not to write’ is frequently uttered by many in the power corridors. However, lately powerful Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani refused to do so.

Gilani, whose tone has been changed after the Senate elections, submitted a 24-page reply to the Supreme Court, making it clear that he has not intentions to write a letter to Swiss authorities against his boss, President Asif Ali Zardari.

Ferocious party loyalty is also involved in the bold stance of Gilani, which brought the executive into direct conflict with superior judiciary.

Expressing his desire to become political martyr, he also said he was ready to go to jail, but will not write letter to Swiss authorities.

It has become a central issue on our political landscape, at least for now. The premier’s disobedience of the court will open up many quandaries.

Apparently he believes that he will gain more than lose in case of his punishment.

Some analysts argue that it is crucial to get the bottom of what happened in the Switzerland involving corruption cases worth billions.  However, there are some straightforward facts that need to be confronted.

Ultimately, it is the law which must win through, as emotions, rhetoric and accusations alone will lead us nowhere.

Apparently, the Constitution states quite obviously that president enjoys immunity and no case can be initiated against him until he holds office. The premier vowed that he will uphold the said clause at all costs.

Surely, it is imperative that the Constitution and all that it says with regard to the letter be abided by if we are to keep away from a state of chaos. In the present scenario, we are not really far away from such situation.

However, the question of immunity is one that discovers different views from two sides. PM Gilani is determined to go by the document which ascertains the supreme law of the country.

In the larger perspective, what outcome comes next depends clearly on the majority.

We are seeing the unpleasant prospects of yet another civilian leader moving for jail and further tensions evolving between key institutions.
