Quoting the report of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Mark Siegel reported that former president Pervez Musharraf knew of the plotting of the BB’s murder.

Siegel, an adviser and friend of late Benazir Bhutto, wrote that Musharraf was aware of the timing and personally ordered the destruction of evidences. He also reported about two police officers who directly reported to Pervez Musharraf and have knowledge about the murder plot.

In the latest development, the PPP-led government has initiated criminal proceedings against the seven accused, including Musharraf, requesting Interpol to issue an international warrant for the arrest of Musharraf after a four-year investigation.

The police of all 190 Interpol member countries will have the power to arrest Pervez Musharraf if the international body issues a red warrant against him.

According to Siegel, the report issued by the United Nations (UN) Fact Finding Commission also reported the similar facts.

A blistering 70-page report by the UN tribunal in essence held the then government responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The report elaborated that the failure of the police to effectively probe the murder, and the destruction of evidences, was deliberately ordered from high-ups.

It also noted that if the law enforcement agencies had provided her appropriate security, the incident would have been prevented.  The findings of the JIT were based on the UN report.

It observed, “JIT is of the firm opinion that already established security breach and destruction of evidence on the day of assassination is part of a wider conspiracy to eliminate Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto from the political scene before the elections. It is clearly evident that conspirators had assurances and support of the then-president”.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007 as she left a campaign event in Rawalpindi. She was provided with virtually no security at all despite the fact that Musharraf had ordered intense security teams to guard two other former prime ministers, who were his political supporters.

Immediately after the incident, the crime scene in Rawalpindi was washed down, with forensic evidence hosed away by the police. The police did not interrogate eye-witnesses, take no autopsy and did not probe the matter in detail.

Siegel noted down the motive behind BB’s assassination was clear, the elimination of the iconic leader of the country’s dominant party, which seemed on the verge of a landslide victory.
