Syria welcomes peace plan by Kofi Annan

Beijing: (Tuesday, March 27, 2012) Syria, after suffering through sustained chaos and political unrest, which well ensued in creating armed struggle, has accepted a peace proposal crafted by Kofi Annan – former secretary general
United Nations. The proposal, as per initial news, aims to staunch the bloodshed in the strike-hit country.

The United Nations and Arab League, while welcoming Syria’s announcement to accept the peace plan, has cautioned that implementation of the plan is the key to peace.

Independent monitors reporting unrest in the country say that over 9100 people have been killed in Syria over the past year alone as President Bashar al-Asad’s regime do not feel hesitant in cracking down the protestors. Considering
this situation, the plan insists to halt the fighting. If implemented, it is hoped to end violence in the country.

Sharing details of Kofi Annan’s initiative to this plan, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said today in a statement, “The Syrian government has written to the Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan accepting his six-point plan, endorsed by the
United Nations Security Council.”

He said, “Mr. Annan views this as an important initial step that could bring an end to the violence and the bloodshed, provide aid to the suffering, and create an environment conducive to a political dialogue that would fulfil
the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.”

Annan is currently in Beijing, China, on a trip to seek support for his six-point agenda which also proposes a daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefire and access to all areas affected by the fighting in Syria.

During his trip, he has held talks with the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who has expressed his support for the mediation efforts; a similar support has been expressed by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev when Annan visited him
Moscow over the weekend.

Sharing details of the plan, Fawzi said that Annan has written Asad demanding Damascus to put its plan commitment into immediate effect.

He has also called for the need to release the people detained over the past year of the uprising against Assad’s regim.

He said, “Mr. Annan has stressed that implementation will be the key, not only for the Syrian people, who are caught in the middle of this tragedy, but also for the region and the international community as a whole.”
