Memo gate scandal almost at a standstill

There seems to be no clear progress in the memo gate scandal in which the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani is allegedly involved. The memo gate scandal is being over looked by the memo commission, whose investigation seems
to be taking a long time in order to reach any significant improvement.

Haqqani appears to be digging in his heels for what some observers see as a political strategy aimed at bringing into question the judiciary’s alleged activism in pursuing the matter.

The memo commission addressed Hussain Haqqani in the following words upon the seeming negligence on part of the former ambassador: “(The) Commission directs Foreign Office to contact the former ambassador through its embassy in the US and ask the latter
to appear before the commission on April 12. Also, Haqqani’s Counsel should convey him commission’s order through email.”

Mansoor Ijaz, the America based Pakistani businessman had alleged that the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States had passed on a memo to the US which asked for the help of the superpower in order to reign in the military of Pakistan. The memo
indicated that it had originated from some high ranking government office in Pakistan despite the fact that it was unsigned. The reason for asking for the reigning in of the military of Pakistan was because the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan
People’s Party was concerned that a coup may take place because of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani, was scheduled to appear before the memo commission on April 5th, Thursday.

Haqqani’s application had stated that the SC should pass an order allowing the commission to record his statement through similar facilities extended to Mansoor Ijaz. The memo commission had earlier denied a request by Haqqani to record his testimony via
video link, but had advised the former ambassador to forward his request to the apex court.

The memo gate scandal initially took the country by storm when it came to light last year but it is now gradually losing heat.
