Babar Awan seeks unconditional apology from Supreme Court

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012 12:21:52 by

In quite an odd move, the counsel for former law minister Senator Babar Awan on Tuesday filed an unconditional apology letter in the Registrar Office of the Supreme Court (SC).

Minutes before the hearing of contempt case, Babar Awan through Advocate Ali Zafar sought apology from Justice Asif Khosa.

Following his refusal to appear before the court as witness to Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has sidelined him in the party and mainstream politics.

Earlier, Barrister Ali Zafar filed a plea with the Supreme Court arguing that his client will be undergoing medical checkups in India till April 17 and hence should be exempted on the medical grounds from appearing before the court.

The Supreme Court began contempt of court adjudication after the former law minister flayed criticism on higher judiciary for its verdict handed down on December 1, 2011, pertaining to the formation of a judicial commission to probe the Memogate scandal.

The court heard the case on Monday regarding Awan’s derogatory remarks against the apex court but he could not be charge-sheeted due to the absence of Attorney General Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq.

Deputy Attorney General appeared before the bench and submitted that the AGP was present in Supreme Court’s Quetta Registry where Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing Balochistan peace-related cases, therefore, he could not attend Awan’s contempt case hearing in Islamabad.

Babar Awan’s Counsel Barrister Ali Zafer told the court that presence of the Attorney General was necessary on this occasion, pleading the court to adjourn the proceedings.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, in his remarks, said the court has decided to convict Babar Awan in the contempt case. Later the court adjourned the proceedings of the case till April 10.

The apex court had taken the notice of former law minister’s press conference on Memogate scandal that ridiculed its verdict.

The court in its ruling had declared that the press conference of December 31 by the former law minister come under the contempt of court.
