Media reshaping the Pakistani and Indian culture

The times are changing, making a handful of things that were eye with contempt a couple of decades ago quite legitimate and a part of today’s progressive culture.

Almost all the so-called modern countries of today went through this shift, starting off with real conservative societies before allowing liberal thoughts and practices to set in. What was considered taboo at one time became a norm at another, accompanied by a number of laws to give it protection again groups who were bent on causing friction.

Pakistan and India are no different when it comes to change. Both the countries were once a single unit, sharing more than just land. Their cultures were pretty similar despite the difference of religion and language. However, living in close proximity caused both of them to not only respect each other’s practices, but also adapt them as their own.

Today, the media in both the countries are playing a huge role in reshaping the way the society thinks. The narrow-minded mindset of the people is being opened with, though quite cautiously as a big leap is met by a strong backlash. The entertainment industry is without any doubt playing the key role in inducing a culture shift.

Watching Hollywood movies hardly has any effect on the mindset of the people as they understand that the culture shown in those movies is specific to the regions shown in the movie. However, they are greatly influenced by what they are exposed to by the Pakistani and Indian entertainment industry. Both the industries are becoming more and more influenced by the western media and culture and thus introducing them to their respective societies. Coming across the westernised culture through their own media, the people have gotten confused and suddenly considering it to be their own, thus shedding traditional mindset and losing themselves to what is now being regarded as the global culture.

It is only a matter of time before both India and Pakistan completely lose their traditional culture and become westernised. This may have both advantages and disadvantages depending on how open one keeps his mind, though one thing is for certain, the people of both Pakistan and India will lose more than just their culture if they allow their moral values to blur while undergoing the process of change triggered by the media.
