Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani assured the joint-sitting of parliament that his government will implement the recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) on new terms of engagement with the United States in letter and spirit.

He observed, “Today’s resolution will enrich your respect and dignity. Our partnership cannot be at the cost of our sovereignty or territorial integrity”.

Earlier, parliament unanimously approved the recommendations presented by the bi-partisan committee, directing the government to no more let Pakistan serve as conduit of arms to Afghanistan.

However, it hinted a green signal for a resumption of non-lethal NATO supply-line to the war-ravaged Afghanistan.

Gilani while speaking on floor of the house commented, “Today Pakistan has crossed another milestone. We have brought real and substantive oversight and democratic accountability to our foreign and security policy”.

He informed the house that US President Barrack Obama had assured him at a recent meeting in South Korea that Washington would respect the outcome of Pakistan’s parliamentary review and country’s sovereignty.

He said, “The US president has given us a commitment and he knows the meaning of sovereignty”.

Although the joint-session of parliament did not openly discuss resumption of the suspended NATO supply-line, Prime Minister Gilani hinted the government’s intention to restore supply routes for US-led allied forces battling in Afghanistan.

He asserted, “We suspended supplies and boycotted the Bonn conference when all this was needed but we think the time has come to re-engage ourselves with dignity and with self respect”.

About demand of the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan for assurances about what the incumbent would do if its demands were not met accordingly, he assured the American will respect decisions of the parliament.

Gilani pointed out that the incumbent government’s position vis-à-vis dealing with foreign countries would remain weak without parliament’s support. “The solidarity demonstrated today has strengthened our hands,” he added.

In his view, Parliament’s resolution was not a small thing, saying the country’s respect will be enhanced the world over after today’s resolution. He expressed confidence saying this resolution will be respected by all stakeholders.
