Lennox Lewis: I am a practical joker

The most recent undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and the International Boxing Hall of Fame member, Lennox ‘The Lion’ Lewis, recently made one of the cruellest April fool’s Day jokes, as he remarked he has made up his mind to fight Vitali Klitschko for one more time.

He tweeted, “I’ve enjoyed retirement but there is unfinished business at hand & 125 million reasons 2 finish. Sept 29th #LLVK2 #DoneDeal”

After reading the tweet, nobody realized the date because the boxing fans and the media all over the world thought that a much-awaited rematch of Lewis and Vitali has finally become reality.

Lewis, now 46, while having a candid chat with the BoxingScene.com admitted that he also got surprised by looking at everyone’s reaction.

“It’s funny because the reaction from even some of my friends was like ‘we’re ready to go back to war,’ and ‘if this is my decision, they’re with me,’” laughed Lewis in a chat with BoxingScene.com earlier this week. “I played with them for a minute, but when I let them know, they just started laughing. They said ‘aw man, you never change. You’re always a practical joker.’ I think that’s one of the things people don’t realize about me, that I am a practical joker.”

Lennox Lewis, who often referred to himself as ‘the pugilist specialist, held a record of winning 41 of his 44 professional fights, with 32 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout. He was all business both in and out of the ring. Nevertheless, when he was asked whether if he misses boxing or not, he replied by saying a no.

Lewis thinks the heavyweight division has lost its glory and there are no more interesting fights happening these days. He was especially upset with Dereck Chisora for slapping Vitali in his face.

He added, “No, I don’t miss it. I do miss the kind of attraction I once gave in the sense of, you look at some of the fights right now, and I don’t think they’re good fights.”
