Bollywood film ‘The Dirty Picture’ gets India TV ban

Milan Luthria’s film ‘The Dirty Picture’, which featured Vidya Balan in the lead role, took the box office by storm last year when it was released on December 10 but the information and broadcasting ministry has found the film too dirty for prime-time television viewing.

‘The Dirty Picture’, for which Balan bagged her first and only National Award, was scheduled for the telecast at noon and 8pm on Sunday on Sony TV but the ministry didn’t allow it and instructed the channel to broadcast the film after 11pm so that children don’t get to see it.

According the reports, the original A-rated (Adults Only) film had to undergo almost 59 cuts but still it failed to get a U/A certificate (Parental Guidance) and this news has gone with many B-town celebrities.

The decision was made at the last moment as a result to which Sony had to run a ticker on its channel in order to apologize to its viewers for the inconvenience.

“I am shocked and disappointed that this decision was taken at the last moment,” said director Milan Luthria.

“A national award-winning film cannot have a national telecast??? This is… simple hypocrisy,” director Karan Johar said on Twitter.

Karan added, “If the censorship is not a final authority then what is??? Complicated and blurred lines defeat the core of democracy!!!! #dirtypicture”

Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “Has the telecast of The Dirty Picture actually been stopped?!! I’ll believe it when I don’t see it. #shame.”

Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, tweeted, “The Dirty Picture trending.That’s the point abt its popularity.The most discussed & celebrated National Award-winner is nt allowed 2telecast.”

Tusshar Kapoor tweeted, “Really unfortunate that after all the necessary cuts and a valid UA certificate, The Dirty Picture could not be telecast today on sony tv.”

Well, all said and done, let’s see if ‘The Dirty Picture’ gets permission from the Censor Board of Film Certification.
