Advaita Kala is the one who wrote the story for ‘Kahaani’, which grossed Rs. 54.55 crore at the box office. ‘Kahaani’ was a female-oriented movie which featured Vidya Balan in the lead role. Before the release of the film many thought it would fail at the BO since Bollywood is a male dominant society.

However, when the film got released it was received very well by the audiences. Perhaps this is a reason why Kala has insisted that the women are also heroes and they should get better representation in the industry.

“A woman cannot be used as a commodity and cast in a certain mould. The hero needs to acknowledge the heroine because the women are also heroes. The gender-sensitive mindsets in Indian cinema will have to go,” Kala told IANS in an interview citing ‘Kahaani’ as an example.

These days Kala, who is considered a pioneer of India’s chick lit genre, is working on a script for a television serial.

“It was a great experience conceiving the story of ‘Kahaani’, but now I am looking forward to a script for a new television serial that I am writing. I hate looking back,” Kala told IANS.

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, ‘Kahaani’, which was released on March 9, turned the economics at the box office by running to packed houses for more than four weeks yet the critics picked up ‘Pan Singh Tomar’ as ‘the best movie of the year’.

Nevertheless, Kala is completely unfazed with the decision, as she said the future is more important to her and she wants to put ‘Kahaani’ behind.

She said: “I had met Sujoy Ghosh around 2009 and he encouraged me to conceive the movie.”

“’Kahaani’ is past for me, “she added.

Along with Vidya Balan ‘Kahaani’ also featured the likes of Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Indraneil Sengupta and Saswata Chatterjee in key roles but it was Balan who took the film to the glory.
