Contempt proceedings against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto were commenced in 1976 in the National Awami Party (NAP) case, which was banned by the government and the decision was upheld by courts. Bhutto, however, could not restrain himself from airing statements against the party.

The late Abdul Wali Khan, father of Asfandyar Wali, had then filed a contempt petition against Bhutto, upon which the court had then entertained Wali Khan’s petition and issued notices to the serving prime minister.

However, the notices were discharged as no concrete evidences were found against Bhutto.

The history would highly appreciate Gilani if he resigns from his office as per his earlier announcement and file a review petition to clear himself of the allegations.

There are numbers of such examples in the civilized countries, as recently a railway minister resigned from his post after a rail accident. Almost 90 per cent of the media and opposition parties are seconding the ruling of the apex court.

One would say that the apex court has shown restrain in this case. The PPP should also reciprocate instead of holding protest demonstrations. Apart from mobilizing people for the protest, it should file a legal appeal it is not satisfied with the decision.

This is very unique kind of an occasion for the prime minister as he had made happy many workers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), particularly Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, by defying the court’s rulings.

In order to safeguard a single personality, the entire country has been put into crisis. All the government resources are being used shield the president, which is not happened any part of the world.

The million dollar question is will this conviction or its suspension bring any relief to the national already hit-hard by numerous crises like inflation, energy shortage, unemployment, law & order, education and  health facilities.

However, no one cares 180 million people and existing issues will continue to multiply manifold likewise.

This political instability, which is already in bad shape, will also affect our economy. Now the ball is in the PPP court as all depends on its new course of action.
