Deccan Chargers all-rounder Cameron White has lauded Kumar Sangakkara for making an unselfish decision of dropping himself from playing XI for an important Indian Premier League (IPL) game against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.

To send the best possible side into the field, Sangakkara opted not to play the game, despite being the regular skipper of the side. As a result, the leadership responsibilities were handed over to White who did a fine job in the middle.

It was a nail-biting clash at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Batting first, the Chargers could only score 100 runs. A few of their batsmen took good start but failed to capitalise. Consequently, the whole line-up was bowled out in 18.4 overs.

It looked like an easy chase for the Mumbai Indians but the Deccan bowlers made things extremely difficult for them. Dale Steyn, in particular, made the best use of the pace friendly conditions and bagged a couple of wickets. In his four overs, the South
African gave away only 10 runs.

Despite an excellent effort, the Chargers could not stop the Indians from winning. Harbhajan Singh and his men achieved the target in 18.1 overs. White was slightly disappointed with his team’s effort, but he did not forget to praise Sangakkara for his unselfish
step.

"Darren Lehmann [team coach] and Kumar were discussing and decided the best team for this wicket. The team we played tonight was what Darren and Kumar decided to go in with. It was a very selfless thing for Kumar to do, to pick that team," White said at
the post-match media conference.

The Australian added, "No doubt Kumar is a class player, but that’s what Darren and Kumar decided tonight. It was unusual to change the captain, isn’t it? That’s the way it happened. Unfortunately we were not good enough tonight. And Mumbai were too good
tonight."

When asked what went wrong, he explained, "The basic turning point is we were not able to score 20 more runs. Unfortunately we failed to bat out our overs. At the end of the day we are not going to win too many T20 games when we score 100."
