Osama bin Laden and Pakistan

On May 2, 2011, the US Special Forces attacked a compound of Al-Qaeda’s top leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, the Garrison town of Pakistan, killing him and taking his body away.

Pakistan faced reactions triggered in result of killing of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, inside the Pakistani territory.

Many felt that they had been betrayed by what they saw a shameless attack on the country’s sovereignty, particularly the military establishment.

A couple of incidents occurred simultaneously. Firstly, Pakistan set itself on the course of disengagement with the United States while in the second phase Pakistani military became separated from the ruling-PPP government.

In November 2011, the incident of Salala check-post took place where NATO forces attacked and killed 24 troops inside the Pakistani soil. Reacting actively on the occasion, Pakistan halted NATO supply-line.

Soon after the incident, the federal government faced the charges of treason at the Supreme Court for conspiring against the Pakistan army through its envoy to the United States.

Terming lack of trust as a reason to keep the operation secret, the US claimed that every time they shared informed with the Pakistani military about the impending operations against militants, the information was leaked.

Americans believe that the Pakistani establishment wanted operations only against those elements that were killing Pakistanis inside the country and not against those who were attacking NATO and allied forces battling in Afghanistan.

There are some questions which should have answers, particularly about presence of Osama bin Laden in the garrison town of Abbottabad. A judicial commission, established to probe the presence of the Al-Qaeda chief, yet to release its report despite passage of one-year to the incident.

According to some media reports, bin Laden was used to visit his aides resided at different localities.

Some international experts say the elements inside the Pakistan military organized safe heavens for the Al-Qaeda chief. The Americans, however, claimed that his presence was facilitated at any official level.

Without any doubt, the Al-Qaeda is stationed at the top of the terror pyramid in Pakistan and the Taliban owe allegiances. At the same time, the elements in North Waziristan have been linked to the worldly recognized militant outfit.

The presence of Osama bin Laden in our midst simply raises queries about the policies of our continuing state structures.

The responsibility of killing Osama in Abbottabad on May 02, 2011 does not lie on the shoulders of Pakistan, as he was killed by the US Navy SEAL’s in Pakistan on the instructions of US Government.

During Soviet invasion on Afghanistan, Osama was the blue eyes boy of US Administration. and the closest friend turn into foe when the former Soviet Union armed forces withdrew from Afghanistan.

Osama’s death will never haunt Pakistan, as was never near and dear to Pakistan.
