Rise and falls of former Law Minister Dr. Babar Awan (Part Two)

Aitzaz Ahsan, the famous lawyer and activist of the party, turned the tables within few days.

Aitzaz Ahsan while showing his agreement to contest contempt of court case of PM Gilani lashed out every move of Babar Awan to take up any legal or political task for the party. He also assured that Awan was kept at bay from President Asif Ali Zardari.

Acting under a well thought-out place in the apex court that the premier acted only on the advice of Law Minister, Aitzaz Ahsan nominated Babar Awan, Masood Chisiti and Nargis Sethi to appear before the court in defence of the premier.

Awan was already frustrated by the ongoing contempt of court proceeding against him. He considered is wise not to appear before the court for Gilani, who had opposed his oath-taking as law minister.

Unfortunately, this refusal proved to be the plummet for Awan as it caught President Zardari’s ire who thought Gilani was protecting him.

According to the reports, Rukhsana Bangish on directives of President Zardari tried to convince Babar Awan for testifying in favor of the premier. Awan, however, declined to even hold a meeting with President’s emissary.

Resultantly, the furious president closed doors on Awan and made changes in the Law Ministry. In the next phase, he was removed from the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS).

Now, he was no more invited to the core committee meetings in the presidency, while Gilani was already annoyed to him.

In quite an unexpected move, Babar Awan filed an unconstitutional apology before the apex court after having been deprived of the status of practicing lawyer with the suspension of his license.

Awan became irrelevant for the president as lawyer following suspension of his license because he was unable to appear in courts, defending Zardari or his government.

In a telling blow to Babar Awan, the PPP’s top leadership took away his last official post within the party fold.

In the latest development, Rukhsana Bangash has been replaced Babar Awan as finance secretary to the party.  After losing this post, Awan will no longer be member of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

The party leadership has stripped him off all posts, closing the chapter of former federal law minister Dr Babar Awan in Pakistan People’s Party.
