Brazil’s Tomas Hermes walked away with top honours from the opening heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that kicked off at the well-reputed beach break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday, May 1.

Hermes’ success in the first heat of Round 1 served to carry him through into the second round (Round of 48) of the event. France’s Jeremy Flores successfully made it through into the next round as well after claiming the runner-up position.

The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site on the opening day of the latest ASP PRIME event were neither too friendly, nor too challenging. The clean two-to-four foot waves on offer at Lower Trestles gave surfers an opportunity to unload a few of their most technical tricks, much to the delight of the local crowd. The local as well as international talent making up the competition field were quite pumped up to show off their moves at one of the most prestigious non-ASP World Tour events.

The opening heat of Round 3 saw Hermes square off with Flores, Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu and Brazil’s Caio Ibelli. All four surfers were more than capable of taking a win on their day, thus keeping the crowd in suspense throughout the course of the heat.

As the battle kicked-off, a handful of impressive tricks were landed on the scoring opportunities that appeared. However, Hermes soon managed to take an advantage over his rivals after getting his hands on a couple of good waves, both of which featured a string of powerful turns. The Brazilian surfer got to a heat-total of 13.76 points, which held up until the end to carry him off to victory.

Flores was nothing short of impressive during the course of the heat either, though he ended up conceding victory to Hermes due to a deficit of .20 points.

Aranburu finished in third place after scoring a two-wave total of 12.97 points, while Ibelli was forced to settle for fourth place after finishing with a heat-total of 11.83 points. As a result, both the surfers were forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
