EU launches plan to make the internet safer for children

The European Commission (EC) today unveiled an alliance with telecommunication companies and social networks to improve the protection of minors on the Internet. This is basically to promote the
creation of educational content for children and attractive tools to easily report abuse or harassment, and the development of useful technology for the police in their fight against child pornography.

In addition, to promote the awareness campaigns in schools to educate children about the risks of the Web.

According to the EC, the ratio of underage users surfing internet is growing up to 75%, which makes up one third also from a mobile phone. In addition, four in 10 say they have been exposed to danger from harassment
or misuse of their personal data to content that promotes anorexia and self harm.

Brussels believes that it is not realistic to try to control all content they visit and make a decision based solely on a strategy strengthened legislation therefore committed to a model which will work in coordination with
industry and makes it to children in a quick manner as a credible solution to the problem.

According to the new alliance, named Coalition for a better Internet for children, it
involves several European telephone operators including Telefonica, Spanish companies like Google, Nintendo, Microsoft and Mediaset and the social network Facebook.

The vice president and head of the EC’s Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, has stressed the need that children have about the transparent and simple tools for the safe use of the network In a press conference to present the plan.

Also the curator of the Interior, Cecilia Malmström, has supported the initiative and stressed the importance of the European Union to strengthen international cooperation to combat cybercrime especially in regard to sexual
exploitation and abuse.
