Lotus team principal Eric Boullier optimistic ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix

Lotus team Principal Eric Boullier believes that the E20 will be quicker in Barcelona that it was in Bahrain.

The Mugello test Boullier said has allowed the team to develop the car further and make it quicker. He added that the test was a success and after a wind tunnel session he is confident that the E20 will have more pace in Barcelona.

Romain Grosjean was able to set the best lap time on two occasions of the three day test. Boullier said that everything has gone according to plan during the test and from the data the team has got out of the wind tunnel session it looks that the car has definitely improved but how much relative to other teams remains to be seen.

“Even when the weather wasn’t great (in Mugello), we were able to try some combinations that we would not normally go for during a race weekend, as they take quite a lot of time to set up,” Boullier said. “We’ve learned a lot about the car. Also, our Wind shear session had given a lot of positive results. We know that the E20 will be even quicker now. But performance is a relative concept. Let’s wait and see how our opponents have improved.”

Boullier added that the car will be able to manage the tyres much better in Barcelona that it did in Bahrain but showed his concern over the temperatures not being hot enough for the E20 to perform at its best.

However he said that even when the weather was not so great at Mugello the car as able to try some combinations that normally would not be possible during a race weekend because how time consuming they can be to set up. Therefore, the Mugello test proved a good learning curve for the team.

Talking about Barcelona, Boullier said that the track is very abrasive for the front tyres especially the left one. He is hoping that this is an area where Lotus should do better than its rivals. The only problem that they face is the temperature during the race.

The race is scheduled for May 13, 2012.
